The Third South Asia Judicial Roundtable on Environmental Justice commenced at the Central Bank today with President Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Chief Guest. Chief Justice Mohan Peiris and ministers were among the participants.

Environmental Justice Program 2011-2013

The OGC’s Environmental Justice Program under its Law, Justice and Development (LJD) program is in line with ADB’s long-term strategic framework1 which aims to (i) strengthen environmental regulatory frameworks and enforcement capacities of public institutions, recognizing good governance and capacity development as drivers of change; and (ii) promote regional cooperation. The program is also in line with ADB’s strategy for operational work on the environment from 2013 to 2020,2 which identifies environmental governance and natural capital as two of ADB’s four operational directions to promote transition to green growth.

Asian Judges Create Network on Environment

An Asian Judges Network on Environment has been formally launched in Manila, marking a new stage of cooperation among justices charged with enforcing environmental laws and helping to preserve Asia’s natural capital. The three-day Second Asian Judges Symposium on Environment held last week drew eminent judges and representatives of courts, environment ministries, prosecutor’s offices, the legal profession, and civil society from the Asia Pacific region and beyond.

Unshackling the chains

The world mourns the passing of Nelson Mandela, an icon of peace, freedom, justice and reconciliation. We are grateful for his inspiring example of unflinching courage, compassion, humility and forgiveness. He leaves a world racked with conflict and suffering. But, perhaps his death and his meaningful life would challenge us to take on the responsibility of leaving this world a better place for the children and those yet unborn, as he did.

ASIA: Judges’ symposium launches environment network

The three-day Second Asian Judges Symposium on Environment has formally launched an Asian Judges Network on Environment, marking a new level of cooperation amongst judiciary who enforce environmental laws and help preserve the region’s natural capital. ADB hosted the event in partnership with the Supreme Court of the Philippines, UNEP, the World Wildlife Fund, US AID and the Freeland Foundation.

ASEAN Chief Justices Explore Legal Solutions to Environmental Threats

Legal responses to cross border threats from climate change, pollution, deforestation and the illegal trade in wildlife and timber are at the top of the agenda at a meeting of Chief Justices from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Bangkok, Thailand.

More than 60 chief justices, senior judges and experts on environmental justice from SAARC countries are discussing the state of South Asia’s environment, laws and challenges in Thimphu, reports Bhutan’s “Kuensel” newspaper.
